Magazine Part 2

1. The early magazine covers didn't really have a page to call a cover, and if one did it wasn't very appealing to the eye. It was more 'run down', sad, boring, and a bit too complex. These kind of magazines make us ask if we should use cover lines.
2.  The poster cover is a cover that doesn't really need a cover line, the picture itself shows all the words that are needed. Besides the magazine name and the credits of who made the magazine and took the cover picture, nothing else is really needed.
3. For the cover pictures in the pictures married to type, the models usually has their full body in the picture rather than it being from their chest/torso up. The cover pictures have the model's head overlapping the title, or popping out from the picture in a way.
4.  The forest of words covers seem to be more up-to-date than the other three kinds of covers, the covers also consist of one or two people/models on it. The covers are also covered in words, regardless of the title and the magazine title there are hooks to get the viewer to read the magazine.

Fashion Photography

1. In the Dove video the models lips were made bigger, her neck became longer, her eyes were slightly moved down and bigger, her hair was made longer, her shoulders/neck was made smaller, her cheek bones were raised, and her face was made slightly smaller

2. In the video, the model's nose, lips, eyes, cheek bones (they're higher), shoulders (also higher), some body fat was cut off to give her more curves, her legs were made longer and feet/heels smaller, her neck was are longer, and her skin tone is lighter.

3. The model's body was made smaller, her breasts are made slightly larger, her skin tone is slightly darkened, her curves are more defined, and her hair is made bigger/longer. The lighting is also changed so its lighter and puts more focus on the model.

4. It's really not that ethically acceptable to change the looks of a person in a photo because its not really what they look like and the company only cares about ratings and that people are interested in it and would want to look at the photo. Sometimes when someone changes how one person looks it can be offending to another race, like all the models were girls and they were white. There was no African American, black, or asian models.

5. It would be morally wrong to change, or to mutate, how someone looks when they aren't okay with it and if the person is changing it is trying to make them look bad, trying to make them feel bad about themselves, trying to hurt the other person etc.

6. Some changes like eyes, hair, cutting some body fat is okay but completely changing how someone looks is not okay. If the editor is making someone fatter, 'uglier' or unappealing its really not okay because it goes against that person that is being change in the picture.

7. Fashion photography is supposed to be more appealing to the human eyes and for making money off of magazines, modeling, and other businesses. Photography is meant to take a picture and show it, not necessarily make money off of it unless its a job. Fashion photography pictures have a model who is okay with their looks being changed photography usually does not/is not like that.

8. Both photography and fashion photography pictures both change the actual image like the lighting, cropping, colors, etc. They both are trying to make the picture more appealing to the eye, one focussed on that more than the other.

9. I think you are showing us these videos to make a point and say that sometimes editing/manipulating a picture isn't always good, that some pictures aren't what they seem, and that not all pictures should be manipulated. Models are okay with their picture(s) being manipulated, but not everyone is. Sometimes the manipulation can be bad and against the person and not with them. Changing pictures/photos is technically lying to the viewer rather than just being like, "Oh hey, look at this cool picture/beautiful model, it/they look(s) so cool and nice!" and thats just not really okay.

10. None of these videos are about guys because most men models don't have to go through all of the photoshopping edits, but women do. Women have such high standards for looking pretty, nice, beautiful, appealing etc. they have to have nice curves, be thin, have big breasts and its all just so stupid honestly. Men, on the other hand, just have to be them, they don't really have to worry about their looks to be a model. Some can be muscular, tan, have a beard, glasses, a nice jaw; it all doesn't matter that much and they don't get all the hate for not being the way society wants them to be.

My Favorite Cover

My favorite cover is the Golf Digest with Jimmy Fallon.
Online Description
Golf Digest, June 2014, Jimmy Fallon
"Golf Digest evolved more in 2014 than in any stretch of its 64-year history. Following a major survey that helped us understand the preferences and habits of the millennial golfer, we embarked on a thorough redesign, moving the magazine from strictly service to lifestyle and service. Our June cover succinctly captures this evolution. Not only does this issue represent the first of Golf Digest’s redesign, cover subject Jimmy Fallon, photographed by Peter Yang, perfectly speaks to Golf Digest’s new target audience and fastest-growing segment of readers—millennials. Fallon unveiled the June cover on the Tonight Show."

Critique
In this cover that Golf Digest did, I thought that the background is light enough where the mood is more upbeat and fun and the focus goes towards Jimmy standing on his super mini golf course. His stance is funny and not too serious to a point where it makes people interested in reading it. There's not much about this cover to dislike except for the fact that the background merges with the 'Digest' part of the title and is a bit hard to see at times, also that Jimmy's leg(s) cover up part of his last name. If someone didn't already know what his last name was or who he is/was then they probably wouldn't know until they open up the magazine.

Magazine Covers

Somethings that I'll be thinking about when I design my magazine cover is a kind of catchy slogan, what kind of hook-or pull-to use to grab the viewer in, no colors merge together and are "overused", how to make the cover pop out, and what kind of viewer I'm trying to get and what kind of cover they would like.

Portrait/Self-Portrait Preview

1. As I looked through these photos I felt happiness at first, then confusion, then I felt sorrow. The first 5 photos I understood that they were a young couple and that they were cute together. I can't really explain how I felt looking at these, its hard to say how you feel when looking at pictures of a normal couple go to something worrying, something sad.. It makes you want to say, "I feel sorry for them." because thats what most people do when they hear that someone has lost someone important to them, we naturally feel sorry.
2. I think that the comment means that the pictures show who they are, what their love is/was, how he was strong enough to stay there beside her taking pictures and showing his love. He cared for her greatly not to leave her, she needed him and he needed her.
3. Honestly, I wouldn't write a letter to Angelo-Im not good with these sorts of things. I would only make him miss her more probably, but if I had to write a letter to him I would ask questions.
Ex: Angelo,
I saw the pictures you took of your wife while she was going through Breast Cancer and I kind of just wanted to ask for some of your favorite memories with her, what they were, why they stuck with you. I just hope it isn't prying too much into your personal life.

SELF PORTRAIT AND PORTRAITS PART 1
Tips 1. Experiment with lighting 2. Play with Eye Contact 3. Introduce Movement
Environmental Portrait

I liked these two pictures because the first one seems more deep, it shows more emotion rather than some girl looking into her reflection from a window. Besides the picture being black and white, which seems to add more emotion and thought, the girl is looking at herself with no real emotion and that makes my mind wander to a point where I think about all these thing she could be thinking about, trying to understand her. Theres a husky, thats what really caught my attention for the second picture, not only that but it looks like this man just proposed to his now fiancé, so the feels are real. The sunset, or rise, in the background creates this setting of "oh its so pretty" because usually humans think sunsets/rises are pretty. Everything about this picture is something I find cool, cute, pretty, a bit breath taking, and amazing.
Self Portraits

This may seem weird, but I love self portraits that show how a person is really feeling and the depressed or hurt ones just really get my attention because I feel like they show so much more than the ones that don't. When a person is hurt they usually tend to show how they feel more than when a person is happy. Its kind of hard-for me-to explain this, but when someone feels depressed words can't just tell all of it. When someone says, "There aren't any words to explain how I feel," its kind of true. How someone acts shows so much more and these two pictures, which are by the same person (Christian Hopkins), really get my attention and pull me in. I love how creative he gets with his self portraits because he can actually express himself well enough to the point where the viewer gets it, for the most part.

Casual Portraits

There's no real reason why I like these two portraits, most of what I like and what grabs my attention has already been said when I was explaining the other 4 portraits. These two aren't tat different from the others, the guy with the rose is in black and white so that got me. With blue hair and aviators, the look from the girl pulled me into the portrait too, kind of. She's looking off at something but the edge of the portrait is "cut off" so the viewer doesn't know whats she's looking at and that makes the viewer wonder if they can find out what it is by looking in the reflection of her aviators for however long.

For my portrait assignment Im not 100% sure what Im going to do for myself, but I want to show a side of me, who I am, what I do etc. For what I'm going to do for the portrait of another person I'm going to take one of my friend Sam, I want to get the happy side of her when she's laughing or smiling. She's an outgoing, funny, and cool friend and I would really love to fit all of that in a portrait of her. Maybe she can be holding her bunny, Vanilla, in it because she loves Vanilla a lot. I may have to shoot more than one and combine them all together, which ill figure out how to do. There's so many sides to Sam that I really want to capture, but I don't think that they call can be caught in one snap.

Africa and Abandoned Theme Park

1.  The pictures that Nick Brandt took were deep, they showed the wild life in Africa and gave it a new view point. He cares for the animals so much that he will wait 17 days to take a picture of a lion, all because he loved it's face and that, to me, is pretty inspiring. In the pictures he took, I saw the wild life plus a little bit more. There was drama in the pictures, like the animals were thinking about something that is/was going on in their life.
2.
In this picture that Nick Brandt took, a lioness and her cub are together, the lioness is nuzzling her cub while the cub looks at the camera. I really like this picture because it focuses on two lions out of the whole pack, it shows the caring mother and the little cub who could be troublesome or very obedient. The rest of the pack is laying down and in the background, putting more of the focus on the cub and its mother.
3. The rule in this picture is balance, simplicity, and lines; the other lions in the background even the background out, putting more of the focus on the two; because the picture is zoomed in on, or more focused on the two lions which makes it simplicity; the grass on the bottom of the picture leads up to the two lions so leading lines are introduced.
4. Nick Brandt used a Pentax 67 system and possibly the normal lens, or he could've used the P67 120mm soft focus lens. The camera and lens are important when taking a picture because different lenses help for taking different kinds of pictures, like motion, soft focus, focus in general, still, light etc. same with the camera too.
5, 6, 7. Nick takes these pictures of the wild life in Africa because he's moved by them, theres "something deep and emotionally stirring" with the wild life in Africa. Nick is trying to save the animals basically while he captures the beauty of Africa. He's saying that because of all the poaching the wild life in decreasing so much and the crops aren't really growing because of global warming. "I'm not interested in creating work that is simply documentary or filled with action and drama, which has been the norm in the photography of animals in the wild. What I am interested in is showing the animals simply in the state of being—before, in the wild at least, they cease to exist." -Nick Brandt

Abandoned Theme Parks
1. I would go to the Six Flags in New Orleans because of the "Main Street", it offers so much like its beauty, its great for framing, and there are so many shots that can be taken there. The abandoned rides there seem like they can offer so much more than looking broken down and destroyed, instead of taking the pictures of the rides at sundown and getting the really creepy effect, I would take the pictures in the morning or afternoon because then the light can show so much more. The rides can give off different emotions rather than creepy, they can give off something more curious.

2. Five cool and interesting places to take pictures would be the Whitehaven Beach in Australia, Kaieteur Falls in Guyana, the Five color Turquoise lake in the Jiuzhaigou National Park located in China, Thor's Well, and the Zakynthos Island in Greece.
This is a picture of "Thor's Well", which is a hole int he ocean, taken by Majeed Badizadegan.

3. I think that this place would be amazing to take pictures of because of how it makes people go "Whoa..." in awe. It would also be fun and a bit dangerous to go to the body of water in which the hole lays. Thor's Well is near Cape Perpetua in Oregon, so it probably isn't that dangerous, but it would be so much fun to go to the cape to take pictures of it. There can be a person on the other side of the hole to scale it. The water looks like mist thats being sucked into the hole never to be seen again, it makes me want to go and see where the mist/water goes, its like an adventure but not really.
4. If I were to go to Oregon, I would need a ticket to fly over, a camera and lens that would be good to take pictures of water and freeze the motion behind the focus. Expenses wise, I think the price would be well over $1,000 by far. I would need a way to get out to Thor's Hole, waterproof equipment, a place to stay, food, etc.

Funny Captions

Here we have Ann (woman on the left) and Marcie (woman on the right) at Ann's 78th birthday party  taking a picture in a photo booth, but they only have one more time to take a nice picture and Marcie decides, as Ann's best friend, to mess it up and tries to hide her laughter before the photo snaps; Ann finds out right before the picture is taken, turns and yells asking why Marcie messed it up. Ann is going to go to Europe with her second husband because he got a great job offer and she really wants a nice picture of hereof and Marcie to take with her so she remembers being with her on this day, kind of like a birthday present to herself.
Sophie and Maxine decided that they were going to go into the ocean and wait for Atlantis to rise. That morning they had been read a horrible story and they wanted to be washed away, disappearing with Atlantis.
Here at Holby City Hospital, we don't care if you have Alzheimer's disease, it doesn't matter if you end up getting lost because you're going to go to hell one way or another. Citizens have been calling Holby City Hospital hell for centuries.

Mural Project and Great Black and White Photographer part 3

1. I think that the theme that we could take around the school for the mural project is anything "artsy." It should be something that shows emotion, that means something more than the photo really is. Its hard to explain because when pictures are in black and white they end up being more powerful than pictures with color.
2. We should be able to use both phone cameras and regular cameras, but it should be up to the person taking the pictures to decide what they want to use.
3. Maybe the mural should go by/near the main entrance so its in a place where most people can see it.

GREAT BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHERS PART 3

1. Minor White's photos just caught my interest, nothing in particular really caught my eyes. I guess his photos just gave off more meaning than if someone else were to take the exact same picture.

 2. (First picture) I see the rays of the sun beating down on a mountain through the clouds, telling people to look at the mountain's beauty when really its the rays of light that hold the most beauty in the picture. A river is running to the mountain, or away from it, leading people back to the mountain regardless of where its true destination really is. The trees surround the mountain and river, holding the animals in and giving them a home, giving the mountain something to look and be proud upon.
I smell the air surrounding the forest, the freshness of the air is refreshing. The fish in the river give off a slightly potent smell once I find myself standing beside it, the algae in the river give it an even more potent smell. But the air that surrounds the mountain gives off the smell of rock being torn away at by the animals that climb it every so often.
I hear the wind blowing through the branches of the trees and hitting into something, creating a small "whoosh. Animals secretly crawl around gathering food, communicating to one another in their own language. The mountains softly groans as parts of it's rocks hit the ground with a soft-or loud-"thud".
I taste the fresh air in the forest. It tastes like a refreshing, soft but slightly bitter like coffee in the morning. I also taste the water from the river as it runs past me bit by bit.
I feel the soft dirt that surrounds the mountain and forest, some of it may be patted down from the animals running around, but its still soft. I feel the icy cold water coat my hand as I stick it into the river, cupping it so I can get a small drink. I also feel the warmth from the rays of the sun beating down onto my back from being split by the clouds.

(Second picture) I see the road looking like it will go on forever and ever, giving me no clue of where I shall end up next. The trees that surround it look like cotton that has been pulled in every direction, forcing it to look like a branch on a tree. The branches from the trees stretch up into the sky, leading my eyes to the clouds rolling above in the pretty blue sky.
I smell a slight hint in the air that it could rain soon. The air carries it around as it blows into my face also making me smell the grass that keeps the path from expanding too far in width. There are birds flying around, some carrying berries which also mixes into the air just ever so slightly.
I hear the birds flying past me, letting the wind guide them back to their nest. The wind blows softly into my ears, whispering and telling me to keep following the path. I go a bit off of the path and into the grass which my feet crush, creating a crunch when I step on the dead blades of the grass.
I taste the moist in the air that makes it seem like the place where the path is is humid. When I open my mouth to breathe in, a small leaf lands on my tongue. Bitter spreads across my tongue and I spit it out.
I feel the blades of grass cut into my bare feet when I walk onto the grass, some leave small indents on my feet. The wind surprisingly softly slaps me in the face telling me to get back on the path and to keep walking. The path welcomes me back by bringing a sharp pain into my left foot, the gravel sticks to my foot making it harder and harder to keep on walking. My legs begin to feel sore, but I keep walking because the wind and path want me to.

Academic-Post Shoot

For this photo I used the rule of simplicity. The subject of the photo is hard to tell unless the one viewing the photo has been in the room before, but the girl in the navy blue shirt is sitting down working on something. When people look at this photo, the subject is clear-unless they want to look at the beautiful lamp-because she's taking up most of the space in the photo. In this photo its hard to tell what the girl is doing. Is she working on a paper, a computer, a drawing etc.? The computer she's working on was covered up by another girl who I cut out of the picture because she was distracting.

In this photo the rule of balance is applied because theres the French teacher and the students evenly balancing the photo out. The subject is the class itself, not something in particular. Theres not one person being focused on in this photo. When people look at this photo the subject should be clear. There's french on the board not a world map, math/numbers, music etc.

The rule for this photo is simplicity because the guy is in focus and not in the background blurred out. The subject is hard to tell what it is because the viewer cannot see whats on the paper he's holding, or the paper at all. Regardless, the subject is choir. It is not that clear to people what the subject really is. I could've included the sheet music that the guy is looking at so he can sing.

For this photo the rule is leading lines because of the tree the person is painting is leading to their hand which holds the paintbrush that points back to the painting. The subject is art, painting specifically. The person is holding a paintbrush and painting a tree. The subject is clear when people are looking at the photo.

THE PHOTOS BELOW ARE FOR FUN AND ONES I REALLY LIKE CAUSE THEY'RE FUNNY.

Its one of the choir teachers, he looks hella funny. No, this was not photoshopped in.
Self explanatory.

Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO

APERTURE

1. Aperture in the camera is like our pupils, deciding what amount of light to let in. If there is too much light, the background can be blurry.
2. The smaller the Aperture number, the higher the Aperture size will be.
3. If there is a smaller aperture, which lets more light in, and there's already enough light, then the background will be more blurry and not as "good." The Depth of Field is not just the focus of the picture, but everything in it.

ISO
1. An advantage of using a higher ISO during a sporting event is that it will come out better, there won't be as much motion blur because if the ISO is higher than the base, the speed will be a fraction of a a second instead of a second or more.
2. The author said that if someone is using a lower ISO, than the picture won't add more "noise" to it. They also basically said that lower ISO is more for when things aren't moving as fast, or not at all.
3. The author said that using a higher ISO is more for when the object is moving at a faster speed and a second would be too long and create motion blur. When theres a fraction of a second needed to take the picture the ISO needs to be higher.

Unusual and Interesting Photos

1. I think that Christian's work is cool, unique, and eye catching. It kind of hurts my eyes at first, but after that its easy to tell what he's kind of doing.
2. Maybe Christian Rhum made his work by combining different photos together, using different equipment together too?
3. Some building to use for this can be the Statue of Liberty, all that needs to be done is going to New York to go see it. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is in Italy, so it is easy access.

Part 2
*WIP*

Part 3
1. Edgar Muller, Vincent Van Gogh, and Normal Rockwell. All of their paintings tell a story, they all show a different perspective and they all hold something important in them.
2.
Norman Rockwell's painting looks so much like an actual picture that it just seems like it shows an amazing story, that the runaway (which is the painting's name, Runaway) and the police officer are getting along.
3.

4. The photographer in that took this picture seems to have followed the suggestions quite well. It shows the boy waiting for a bit, maybe wondering where he will go next. It shows a different story, he kept his teddy bear, something that he hold dear to him.
5. I think that all of these photos might inspire me. I'm not 100% sure, but who knows?

Academic Shot Preview

Action and Emotion
In the picture above the two girls are doing an experiment. The experiment seems to excite and scare them at the same time when it "explodes." Water, or whatever kind of liquid it is, goes almost every direction, looking like a snow globe when its shaken.

Best Story

The girls who are handing out food are helping the homeless on their own time, because they want to. They care enough to help them even if they have to do something else. The first homeless lady in the picture seems to be grateful that she can eat another meal.

Most Interesting Stuff

Two people are wearing gloves and masks while there's this mysterious "glow" near their waists. The "glow" is more like a mist, or a fog, but it really isn't. The picture is focused on what the two people are doing, they kind of take up most of the right and left sides while the mist takes up more of the focus and center of the picture.

Academic and Community Service Picture

The picture I chose it called "Drop the Bass" by Maria Martinez. Theres a girl in the background pouring/putting paint onto a speaker as it plays music with enough bass to make the paint move. The pain practically jumps from the speak into the air and I thought that it was cool that the paint does that. One rule that comes up in this picture is balance, the paint is in the middle of the photo, the speaker is distributed almost evenly among the bottom of the picture, and the girl in the background who is putting the paint on the speaker just seems to balance the picture out too.

Classroom and Around the Campus

1. The pictures I looked at today were focussed on school activities and what happens in the picture, like the action. At Bowie, I think that some of the best places to look at the academic activity would be the gym, work out room, science rooms, color guard, and the JROTC.
2. There no real specific classrooms I would like to go to, it just depends on what that class is doing that day.
3. I, as a photographer, would try to find the "right" moment, like when the flag from the color guard is coming down and the guard is about to catch it. Once again, it just has to be the "right" time.
